The Global Financial Centres Index has been tracking the development of the world’s financial centres since 2007 and is the authoritative guide to financial centre success.

The 29th edition of the index, produced in partnership with the China Development Institute in Shenzhen, was launched on 17 March 2021 through a webinar organised between London and Hong Kong, with the support of the Hong Kong Financial Services Development Council.

At the webinar we heard from colleagues in Hong Kong about latest developments, presented the results of GFCI 29 and the progress of financial centres, and heard about the development of Chinese financial centres more widely.

Mr Christopher Hui Ching-Yu's bio

Mr Christopher Hui Ching-yu was appointed the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury on 22 April 2020. He serves on the boards of Mass Transit Railway Corporation Limited, Hong Kong Airport Authority and also as the Chairman of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation. Prior to his appointment, Mr Hui was the Executive Director of the Hong Kong Financial Services Development Council. He spent 13 years at the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, having been the Managing Director for Market Development and Head of Project Management and also in various senior roles in Listing and Market Development. He also worked for a number of multi-national companies in the private sector. He started his career as an Administrative Officer in the Government in 1999 and served in the Economic Development Branch, the Office of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in Beijing and the Home Affairs Department. Mr Hui previously held a number of public roles including Councillor of the City University of Hong Kong, Member of the Mandatory Provident Fund Authority Process Review Panel, Hong Kong Stock Exchange Listing Review Committee and also Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants Disciplinary Panel. Mr Hui holds Bachelor and Master (Hon) Degrees in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford, and Master of Business Administration Degree from INSEAD. He also attended the Stanford Executive Programme (SEP).

Professor Michael Mainelli's bio

Professor Michael Mainelli FCCA FCSI(Hon) FBCS, Executive Chairman, Z/Yen Group, is a qualified accountant, securities professional, computer specialist, and management consultant, educated at Harvard University and Trinity College Dublin. Michael gained his PhD at the London School of Economics where he was also a Visiting Professor of Innovation & IT. Michael is Emeritus Professor & Life Fellow at Gresham College where he created the London Finance initiative asking “when would we know our financial system is working?” His third book, The Price Of Fish: A New Approach To Wicked Economics And Better Decisions, won the Independent Publisher Book Awards Finance, Investment & Economics Gold Prize. Michael is an Alderman and Sheriff of the City of London 2019-2021.

Mike Wardle's bio

Mike Wardle is a Director and the Head Of Indices for Z/Yen, managing work on the development and delivery of the Global Financial Centres Index, Global Green Finance Index, and Smart Centres Index. Mike worked as a civil servant for almost 20 years mostly within the field of education policy. He was a director and then Chief Executive of the General Social Care Council, establishing the regulation of social workers. Mike's career moved into consultancy, programme management and coaching and he worked with Z/Yen for six years delivering programme management services to the Church of England, Unison, and the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust before taking up his current role.

Dr Yu Lingqu

Dr Yu Lingqu's bio

Dr Yu Lingqu is the Vice Director of the Department for Financial Studies at the China Development Institute. His research has mainly focused on financial industry and financial centers, corporate strategic planning and state-owned economic development. His work has been published in Journal of Finance, China Opening Journal, and the China Economic Publishing House.

Dr Au King-Iun

Dr Au King-Iun's bio

Dr Au is Executive Director of Financial Services Development Council (FSDC). Prior to joining the FSDC, he was President of Value Partners Group Limited. Dr Au also served as CEO of Eastspring Investments (Hong Kong) Limited and CEO of BOCHK Asset Management Limited. He also held various senior management positions at other financial institutions including Baring, GMO and HSBC Global Asset Management. Dr Au was named CEO of the Year in Hong Kong by Asia Asset Management in 2012 and 2014. He was awarded the Medal of Honor by the HKSAR Government in 2008 for his valuable contributions to the securities and asset management industry. He was also the Chairman of the Hong Kong Securities and Investment Institute (HKSI) from 2006 to 2008 and the Chairman of the Hong Kong Investment Funds Association in 2004/2005. Dr Au is currently serving as a Council member of the Hong Kong Institute of Chartered Public Accountants, an Index Advisory Committee member of China Securities Index Co., Limited and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Hong Kong among other public services. Dr Au is a CFA Charterholder, a Senior Fellow of HKSI and member of Hong Kong Academy of Finance. He received his BA in Physics from the University of Oxford and PhD in Theoretical Particle Physics from the Durham University.
