The Centre's next members’ webclave (private, invitation-only on-line meeting to bring Centre members together to discuss areas of common interest), is scheduled for Tuesday 12 July 2022, 11:00 to 12:00 (BST).
Are Broad-Based Employee Share Plans Still Fit For Purpose?
Our aim with this webclave is to widen the discussion which stemmed from Jennifer Rudman’s draft paper “SAYE Lookback – Option Price Reset Proposal”. The aim of the proposal was to revitalise SAYE share plans, providing a boost to take-up and the number of companies offering them, by implementing a change to one of the key features – the way that the option price is set.
Due to their low-risk nature, SAYE plans have undoubtedly benefited both employees and employers considerably over the years of their operation and their success has contributed significantly to employee financial well-being as well as employee share ownership in the UK. However, the challenge for SAYE is that the economics have changed which puts a question mark over the number of providers that might be there for it – particularly since YBS’s withdrawal from share plans. SAYE has been impacted by many years of very low interest rates (its original main attraction was that you get your money back plus some interest), how savings are held, and plan administration.
The Option Price Lookback is part of the campaign to make employee share ownership more popular. As the Centre’s prime goal is to foster all-employee share ownership, we thought this a timely cue to take a look at the shape of all broad-based plans currently in use and ask whether they are fulfilling the needs of today’s workforce.
After a brief introduction, our speakers, Jennifer Rudman, Industry Director at Equiniti and Stuart Bailey, Associate Director at Computershare, will set out the issues, covering the latest trends; changing work patterns; the impact of YBS leaving share plan administration; HMRC ERS statistics; the proposed consultation on bonus rates; changes to SIP and use of CSOP; SAYE: option look back feature and auto enrolment.
