Technology Trends: Fraud and Risk, and Mobile Device Insecurity

This Meeting will be based on discussion of two presentations.

1. How SOCA tackles organised crime with Andy Baker Deputy Director, SOCA

Topic Synopsis: Andy will outline SOCA’s approach to tackling organised crime in the field of financial technology. He will look at intellectual property crime (IPC), cybercrime and fraud, and take you through how this Executive Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) of the Home Office is working to prevent and solve these crimes.

Biography: Andy served in the Metropolitan Police Service for thirty years, ending that era of his career as the Commander responsible for overseeing murders in London, New Scotland Yard’s Crime Academy and the lead for combating drugs. He was a hostage negotiator and crisis manager – deployed on numerous cases both in the UK and abroad. Andy also led on a number of strategic programmes and projects including intelligence led policing, homicide prevention, setting up of the first multi agency rape crisis centre and introducing employees drug testing.

Andy leads or has led on a number of national responsibilities, including homicide prevention, threats to life, family liaison, corporate manslaughter and deaths in the working environment. He remains a member of the ACPO Homicide Working Group and vice-chair of the Europol Homicide Working Group.

In 2006 Andy joined the Serious Organised Crime Agency where he is a deputy director.

Andy has a degree in Law, a diploma in Applied Criminal Psychology (Cambridge) and is an Associate of Kings College London. He graduated from the FBI National Academy in 1994. In 2005 he was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal for services to policing.

2. Fraud and Risk, and Mobile Device Insecurity with Joshua Pennell of ISSA UK

Topic Synopsis: They watch you sleep, they watch you work, they hold all your personal and professional data, and they sacrifice security for performance and usability. Your mobile devices present attackers with a 24/7 threat surface (and don't think the hackers haven't noticed). This presentation will dive into the world of mobile device security based on research performed by the IOActive team. It will address common threats, ways to better protect devices and show a demo of an attack in the wild.

Biography: Joshua Pennell is the Director of Community Development for the ISSA UK. In his role, Joshua focuses on helping to extend the ISSA-UK's reach to the research community and beyond. Joshua has participated in the Security industry for 13 years and is the Founder of IOActive; an upmarket global service boutique with specialities in smart grid, ATM, smart phone, and application security services
